Trance

The new film from Director Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire, Trainspotting, 127 Hours)

Only Danny Boyle could get away with "Trance." But guess what? Danny Boyle can get away with "Trance." A lesser talent might have ended up with a far-fetched muddle, whereas the eclectic, Oscar-winning director ("Slumdog Millionaire," "127 Hours") charges through all the obvious problems with this mind-bender with such ecstatic energy and shrieking gumption that they barely register. You're so busy jumping from one wild move to the next that the absurdity doesn't hit you until the film is over, and by then you've had your fun. Driven by a well-measured performance by James McAvoy and a towering one from Rosario Dawson, "Trance" is every bit as hypnotic as its name suggests. McAvoy plays Simon, a gambling addict who helps pull off an art heist at the London auction house where he works. But after a blow to the head, he can't recall where he's hidden the painting. This is, of course, a bit frustrating for his gangster-partner Franck (Vincent Cassel), so after torture doesn't work, he sends Simon to a hypnotherapist, Elizabeth (Dawson), to see if she can retrieve Simon's memory. And thus starts a roller coaster that's as enjoyable as it is improbable, with betrayal, jealousy, secrets, revelations and personal grooming devices unveiled at turn after turn. The story here by Joe Ahearn and longtime Boyle collaborator John Hodge ("Trainspotting," "Shallow Grave") doesn't just have layers, its layers have layers. So yes, explanations can come in a rush toward the end, and threads unravel easily when you chase them back. But Dawson walks through this film with majestic confidence while McAvoy is constantly inches from a full breakdown. And Boyle keeps that tension mesmerizing. One suggestion — don't blink.
