Light Tripping: The Films of Steven Woloshen

SPECIAL EVENT! - NO ADMISSION CHARGE!

Steven Woloshen is a pioneer of camera-less animation, which includes painting, scratching and drawing directly on film. Based in Montreal, he has been making films since the 1970s, specializing in 16mm film production while studying at Concordia University. His films have been screened internationally at festivals including Winnipeg’s Festival of Film and Video Art, the Montreal Underground Film Festival, the Annecy International Animated Film Festival, and I Castelli Animati in Rome. His work is often inspired by jazz, with improvisation and chance playing a large part in the creative process. His film “Cameras Take Five” (2003) inspired by Dave Brubeck, received the Best Non-Narrative Short Film award at the International Animated Film Festival in Ariccia, Italy, and was featured in the Animated Show of Shows, a travelling program of the year’s best international animated short films. His work is also featured in The Sharpest Point: Animation at the End of Cinema, an anthology of animation edited by Chris Gehman and Steve Reinke, co-published by YYZ Books, the Ottawa Animation Festival, and the Images Festival. Woloshen will attend this screening, his first in London, Ontario, and will lead a workshop in camera-less animation for Western University students on Friday March 8 from 10:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. at the John Labatt Visual Arts Centre, room 302. We thank the Canadian Filmmakers Distribution Centre, Department of Film Studies, Arts & Humanities Students’ Council, and University Students’ Council for their financial support of this program, which has been organized by the Western Undergraduate Film Society and McIntosh Gallery.
