The Trip

Official Selection Tribeca Film Festival 2011

Steve (Steve Coogan), an actor hoping to "hit it big in America," is hired by the Observer to review the finest eateries in England's Lake District and Yorkshire Dales. But when his girlfriend Mischa (Margo Stilley) opts out of accompanying him, he asks some other friends to go but they all are too busy. As his last choice, Steve invites Rob (Rob Brydon), a very laid-back actor and he accepts. As they drive through the English countryside, the two verbally spar with each other. Steve's assignment consists of reviewing six different restaurants; this provides them with great pleasure. The two also stop at a few spots of literary interest and strike up conversations about Coleridge and Wordsworth. Upset about the moodiness of his girlfriend, Steve beds several women whereas Rob has some kinky late night talks with his wife. Michael Winterbottom is one of the busiest and most adventuresome film-makers on the planet. He has directed Welcome to Sarajevo, Jude, In This World, Tristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story, A Mighty Heart, Wonderland, and The Road to Guantanamo along with several others. In this mockumentary, he draws out the playfulness of two actors on the road as they wile away the hours. One of their major delights is impersonating Richard Burton, Sean Connery, Woody Allen, Billy Connelly, Michael Sheen, Al Pacino, and especially Michael Caine. Coogan and Brydon are hilarious as they vie against each other in their own private impersonation competition. The Trip provides plenty of laughs and chuckles: it's a hoot from start to finish.
